From Crossroads to Queens:
The Wade Legacy in Ghana
In 1965, Juanita "Mama Yaa" Wilson became the first in the family to set foot in Ghana as a college exchange student with the organization Crossroads. That journey ignited a lifelong bond with the land and its people. She would go on to become Nana Yaa Asantewaa I, the Nkosuohemaa (Development Queen Mother) of Bonkwaso in the Ashanti Region.
Her niece, Titilayo Akua I. Smith (Nana Akua Otubea Baah, Mampong Nkosuohemea), carries the torch as Development Queen Mother of Mampong Akuapem and President & CEO of KGEDC LBG. And Mama Yaa's own daughter, Mashariki Wilson (Nana Yaa Asantewaa II), was recently enstooled as Nkosuohemaa of Aworokurom — continuing the family's tradition of service and leadership in Ghana.
Mama Yaa passed away in 2022, but her legacy lives on through the work of KGEDC and the communities she helped connect across the Atlantic.
